New TheWB.com is live

I’m on vacation, but wanted to let everybody know that the new TheWB.com website has gone live.  They’ve souped it up with full episodes of their old shows, as well as some that were never actually on the WB network, but are owned by Warner Brothers — including Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Smallville, Roswell, Smallville, Veronica Mars, Babylon 5, and some other non-sci-fi classics like Friends, Gilmore Girls, and The O.C.

I’ve been part of the beta testing for the new design, and I’m told that they’ll be adding more episodes of all of these shows to the library as the year goes on.  They also have some cool features on the site, including the ability together clips from their shows to create your own custom-edited clips.  I’m not sure why you’d want to do that — presumable to create commercials for TheWB.com — but it’s a fun way to kill some time!

No word yet whether the site is non-U.S. friendly, and I’m in the U.S., so I can’t test that.  Maybe some of my Canadian and European friends out there can let me know?

Edited to add:  Freakgirl just visited the site, and it looks as if it’s not entirely Mac-friendly yet.

Atari Fever … Catch It!

So for whatever reason, the universe has been bombarding me with memory triggers of my old Atari 2600 lately …

Bomb #1: A couple months ago, I ran across a very funny blog entry at MightyGodKing.com, wherein he’s photoshopped alternative titles onto some classic Atari/Activision games.

Bomb #2: The Daily Shark has been posting his memories of his favorite various Atari 2600 games the past few weeks, including Adventure, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Missile Command, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Bomb #3: The other day I found a site called AtariAge.com, which along with other great material has pages upon pages of screenshots of dozens of Atari games.

Bomb #4: On Friday, Wil Wheaton posted a link to a great article he’d found …

Bomb #5: Atari: The Golden Years … A History, 1978-1981.

The Empire Strikes San Francisco

I’m by no means the first to post this, but it’s too awesome not to share for those who haven’t already seen it.  Photoshopping has come to video …

Stargate: Atlantis Canceled After Season 5

Although I don’t think I’ve ever blogged about it, I’m actually a big fan of the Stargate franchise. It was kind of a slow burn. I picked up Stargate SG-1 around season 3 or so, kind of gradually got into it, then at some point found that I actually looked forward to it every week. It’s not a profound show like Battlestar Galactica, and it’s not “appointment TV” like Lost, but I always considered it — and its spin-off show Stargate: Atlantis — to be fun, well-written sci-fi shows that I catch up with on the weekend, usually while my wife is taking a mid-afternoon nap. (In fact, we have a going joke that Stargate actually helps her to nap.)

You really wouldn’t think writers could get much play out of a big stationary ring that sends people to other planets, but SG-1 was on for TEN YEARS before it was cancelled last year. And Atlantis has been on for five seasons. So it’s obviously done something right. Continue Reading »
