Buffy Season 8, #17

“We were played. We’re all pasties.” - Willow

“You are talking crazy-person talk. Put your words in word places, please.” - Buffy

“Vampires are lurks. A spin is a lie. Toy is bad, but spled is good.” And thus begins Fray 101. Joss does a bit of catch-up in this issue, for those who are silly enough not to have read the Fray TPB already. Other critical bits of info include the fact that Melaka Fray has a twin brother named Harth. Mel has the physical powers of a Slayer, but Harth holds the prophetic memories of past Slayers in his mind. Unfortunately, he’s a vamp — er, that is, he’s a lurk. Mel also has an older sister, Erin Fray, who’s a cop. And a pet spider monkey demon named Gates, which she acquired in a story from “Tales of the Slayers” … which is also when she found the Watcher Library that she currently lives in. And she has a merman associate named Gunther, who sometimes sends her out on thieving jobs.

And that’s the Fray universe that Buffy is introduced to in this second installment of the Whedon/Moline “Time of Your Life” arc. As for what actually happens …

Springfield Punx

Dudes, I think I found a new favorite site … Springfield Punx. What you see below is a collage of many of my favorites (click for a larger version), but you’ll find separate full-sized versions of each Simpson-ized character on the site itself, along with some commentary about how Dean chooses who to draw. And yes, that is Blue Tobias Fünke front and center. And two kinds of Joker. And Halo’s Master Chief. And Stephen Colbert!  Seriously, it’s like this guy is in my head!

gagglefrakked - a web comic

This is a project I started working on a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t really want to share it with the world until I’d proved the concept to myself. Ten installments later, I think I’ve done that. From here on, I plan to crank out one of these a week. Unless it just turns out nobody’s reading it and/or the people who are reading it don’t think it’s funny. So let me know what you think …

Farscape Season Five

Farscape comic book mockupAll sorts of good, bad, and ugly news came out of the San Diego Comic Con this past weekend. So much news that it’s actually taking me a while to work my way through all the blogs out there. But I have to say, the one piece of news that jumped right out at me and put an immediate smile on my face was word that Rockne O’Bannon — creator of the grossly underrated and prematurely cancelled show Farscape — is in the process of creating a canon comic book that will pick up where the “Peacekeeper Wars” TV miniseries left off.

The title is slated to launch in November, and so far, O’Bannon has only committed to a 4-issue arc, but his aspirations are high. “For me, one of the very exciting aspects of doing this in comic book form is that all of [the visual] restraints are off. We can portray a class of creatures, and a multitude of creatures, without the restrictions of television production and budget. The scale of this comic book is going to be the dream version of ‘Farscape,’ the unrestrained version of ‘Farscape.’”

As a fan of Buffy Season 8 and Angel: After the Fall, I’m thrilled when sci-fi shows like this that meet untimely ends get a chance to live on. I can’t wait to see what Crichton and the gang have been up to. Obviously, I’d much prefer to see more episodes of Farscape on television, but since that’s not going to happen, then this is the next best thing.

After all, it’s not like I’m not already reading comic books anyway!
