Trust issues were the order of the day on this week’s episode of Battlestar Galactica. Gone are the days when the Humans and Cylons played cat and mouse, chasing each other through space. And Adama probably daydreams about the good old days when there were only one or two secret “skin jobs” on his ship.

Now there’s a base ship in the Fleet with Humans on it … a variety of Twos, Eights, and Sixes prancing around the Galactica … and it’s become common knowledge among Humans as well as Cylons that the Final Five are somewhere within the Fleet, and that they know the way to Earth. And while you might think that occupying the same spaces and having the same goal would force everybody to trust each other, just the opposite seems to be true. Here’s an early sneak peek at Caprica, the Battlestar Galactica prequel series, due to launch in December 2008. Eric Stoltz has signed on to play “Daniel Graystone, a wealthy computer engineer who, after an emotionally crippling family tragedy, uses his technological wizardry to forever change the future of Caprica.”

In other words, you’re looking at the father of the Cylons.

I saw an odd parallel between the two major plot lines in this week’s episode of Battlestar Galactica. The title is “Faith,” but I almost feel like it should have been “The Crossing.” Allow me to explain …

Roslin hears a fellow cancer patient (Nana Visitor of Deep Space Nine) recount a dream about crossing “The River” into the land of the dead. It’s all very Charon & the River Styx. Anyway, this metaphorical dream seems to be the result of listening to one too many Gaius Christ sermons … and it’s apparently contagious. By the end of the episode, Roslin herself is having the same dream, and the implication is that she’s starting to buy into Baltar’s “One God” brand of spirituality. And after she talks to Adama, we get the impression he might be too. Continue Reading »

Apparently, the past isn’t all that important. It’s all about the future, baby! At least, that’s what I took away from this week’s episode of Battlestar Galactica.

For instance, Gaius Christ is helping his followers dismiss the past by convincing them that the twelve gods of the colonies that everybody’s been praying to for thousands of years never really existed. What’s more, worshiping the wrong god can lead to bad things happening — you know, like Cylons killing your entire family. (”And the correct answer was … Mooormon. Mormon. Everyone else goes to Hell. Sorry.” - South Park) But if you worship Baltar’s One True God, who as we learned last week loves you because you’re perfect, then all will be well. “The pain is how I learn from the guilt. There’s wisdom there. Clarity. You know yourself there…. When you’re in pain, that’s when you learn who you really are. That’s when you focus. Sharp as the point of a knife.” - Six to Tigh

So … it’s safe to say that pain was the common thread this week on Battlestar Galactica. In particular, the pain of guilt. Which Six schools Tigh about when he keeps visiting her cell, trying to learn how he can shut off the guilty pain he feels over killing his wife Ellen for being a Cylon collaborator (without revealing that he’s a Cylon himself). Six is oddly sympathetic to his plight, and in Tigh’s mind, she keeps morphing into the face of his dead wife. In fact, she’s so sympathetic that she gleefully bashes his face in for his own good, and he lets her. But really, it’s just foreplay, and the last we see of them, they’re making out on the floor. Not sure how that’s all going to end up, but as relationships go, it may just be THE most dysfunctional one on the show so far. Continue Reading »
